In the mid-1990s, a valuable processional cross was stolen from Cologne Cathedral. Schäfers Naas, a notorious figure in Cologne’s underworld, is said to have used his contacts to make sure the cathedral treasure was returned. He refused a cash reward. Instead, he asked for a Mass in Cologne Cathedral—saying: “You don’t steal from the cathedral!”
